John Baldessari

John Baldessari (1931, USA), artista visivo, vive e lavora in California. Attualmente insegna arte presso UCLA.

John Baldessari (1931, USA), visual artist, lives and works in California. Abandoning painting in the first half of the 1970's, he is one of the figures of the renewal, in conceptual terms, of the West Coast art scene.  In his early works on canvas, which only appear to refer to a pop aesthetic, he introduces texts and photography, explicitly putting into discussion the act of making art itself only to completely negate it several years later.  Baldessari utilizes photography and text or audio-visual media taken from mass culture (cinema, tv) to investigate the meaning and symbolism of familiar cultural signs. The result is a combination of languages that in their mix suggest narrative associations from single images or texts, offering a multiplicity of meanings.  Exceptional work on codes, the art of Baldessari not just slightly accompanied by a subtle vein of irony, has perhaps paradoxically given life to a visual code that itself has become a parameter, nearly an icon of the culture of twentieth century art. His work has been shown in over 120 one-person and 300 group exhibitions in the United States and Europe in such museums as the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, the Hayward Gallery in London, the Rijksmuseum Kruller-Muller in Otterlo (Netherlands), the Galeria Marga Paz in Madrid and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles.  The range of his production includes artist's books, videos, films, works on paper and public art events. He currently teaches at UCLA.
