CANCELLED è un azione attenta ai minimi dettagli creata da Maria Hassabi per quattro performers che evoca e mette in discussione i sottili scambi di potere tra i soggetti. Le azioni delle perfomers sono accompagnate da un soundscape popolato da voci che pronunciano in successione oltre cento nomi e cognomi di donne, un elenco quasi infinito. CANCELLED è una coreografia tra immobilità e decelerazione, stile distintivo di Hassabi, che attraversa un succedersi di posture femminili basate su manierismi e stereotipi rappresentativi. La verticalità e la frontalità dei corpi dà forma ad un senso di resistenza inteso sia come metafora che come realtà, riflettendo idee in qualche modo evocate dal titolo dell'opera.

Dall'inizio degli anni 2000 Maria Hassabi ha sviluppato una pratica artistica unica, basata sul rapporto tra corpo vivente, fissità dell'immagine e oggetto scultoreo. Le opere di Hassabi riflettono sui concetti di tempo e figura umana, impiegando differenti tecniche per enfatizzare la complessità dell'organizzazione formale. Nella maggior parte delle creazioni di Hassabi il corpo che performa è il soggetto principale, spesso inserito all'interno di imponenti installazioni. Attraverso la meticolosa lavorazione dei pochi elementi essenziali - ogni azione, ogni sguardo - in una negoziazione costante tra la relazione del corpo e la gravità, il tempo e lo spazio, rivela gli effetti fisici collaterali dei corpi al lavoro, ancorando la consapevolezza dei performer e degli spettatori al momento presente. Ogni presupposto spettacolaresi esaurisce, per esporre una corporeità comune e un'intimità radicale.

CANCELLED, a performative work by Maria Hassabi for four female performers, moves within a soundscape that emphasizes an endless lifespan. The choreography utilizes Hassabi’s signature style of stillness and deceleration, and displays representational female poses based on mannerisms throughout history. The use of verticality and frontality create a form of resistance both as a metaphor and as a reality, reflecting on ideas that are directly related to the work’s title. CANCELLED being meticulously crafted, evokes and questions the subtle interchanges of power between subjects.

Since the early 2000s Hassabi has carved a unique artistic practice based on the relationship between the live body, the still image, and the sculptural object. Hassabi’s works reflect on concepts of time and the human figure, while employing a variety of media to emphasize the complexity of formal organization. In most of Hassabi’s works the performing body is the main subject, often embedded within imposing installations. Through meticulously crafting her material in a constant negotiation between the body’s relation to gravity, time and space, reveals the physical side effects of labor, anchoring both dancers’ and viewers’ awareness to the present moment. The initial invitation of a spectacle exhausts itself, and a common corporeality and radical intimacy is exposed.
