Giovedi 4 dicembre 2025 Xing ha presentato RELAY, una durational performance della coreografa canadese Ula Sickle. L’intervento è stato un nuovo Hole che si è localizza nel Salone Banca di Bologna di Palazzo de’ Toschi.

In RELAY, performance coreografata da Ula Sickle, una bandiera nera fluttua in aria, tenuta perennemente in movimento dai performer per cinque ore consecutive, genera al contempo suono e coreografia. Presentata come un'unica azione continua, RELAY si ispira alle numerose proteste che si svolgono in tutto il mondo e in particolare alle marce polacche in difesa dei diritti delle donne chiamate "Czarny Protest" (protesta nera). La bandiera nera non può essere collegata a una battaglia in particolare: sfugge a facili interpretazioni. Il gruppo di diversi performer riuniti dalla coreografa si alternano in una prova di resistenza. I loro movimenti oscillano tra inerzia e speranza, resistenza e impotenza. Ognuno di loro si assume individualmente la responsabilità di mantenere la bandiera in movimento, ma è lo sforzo collettivo che rende RELAY un lavoro dalla decisa valenza simbolica. Come è ancora possibile la resistenza in un sistema che è riuscito a incorporare ogni forma di opposizione? Quale azione individuale e collettiva ci rimane?
RELAY è accompagnata dal vivo dall'artista audiovisivo Ofer Smilansky, seguendo il sound design originale composto dal musicista Yann Leguay, utilizzando luci stroboscopiche amplificate che producono sia il suono che la luce. La bandiera, i corpi, il suono e la luce vengono trattati come co-performer. Anche il pubblico è parte del campo di forza in continua evoluzione. Affinare la relazione tra lo sguardo e tutte le forme di presenza è cruciale per la composizione di un corpo performativo costante che duri nel tempo e sia allo stesso tempo un divenire. La bandiera è un simbolo potente la cui presenza materiale nello spazio, il suo ondeggiare, si trasforma in un incantesimo che acuisce i sensi.

Thursday 4 December 2025 from 6 pm to 11 pm Xing presented RELAY, a durational performance by the choreographer Ula Sickle. The event was a new Hole located in the Salone Banca di Bologna at Palazzo de’ Toschi.

In RELAY, durational performance by Ula Sickle, a black flag floats in continuous motion, and it is kept in motion by several performers for five hours on end. Its movement and the flapping of the fabric become both choreography and sound. Presented as a single continuous action, RELAY draws its inspiration from the many protests taking place around the globe, and in particular from the mass marches in Poland in defense of women’s rights called “Czarny Protest” (Black Protest). The black flagcannot be linked to one particular battle and hence defies easy interpretation. The group of diverse performers that the choreographer assembled relay one another in a test of endurance. Their movements pass back and forth between inertia and hope, resistance and powerlessness. They each individually take on the responsibility to keep the flag moving, but it is the collective effort required that makes RELAY a work with such symbolic value. How is resistance still possible in a system that has managed to incorporate every form of opposition? Which individual and collective agency are we left with?
RELAY is accompanied live by audio-visual artist Ofer Smilansky following the original sound design by musician Yann Leguay, using amplified stroboscopic lights to produce both sound and lighting for the piece. The flag, bodies, sound, and light are treated as co-performers. The audience, too, is part of the ever-evolving force field. Refining the relationship between the gaze and all forms of presence is crucial to the composition of a consistent performative body that endures over time and is simultaneously a becoming. The flag is a symbol whose material presence in the space, its waving, transforms into an incantation that sharpens the senses.
