Sabato 13 aprile 2024 Xing ha presentato a Brooklyn (NY), Abyssal Creatures - Body0 Xilema, sound performance e installazione di Francesco Cavaliere, a cura di ISSUE Project Room, organizzazione interdisciplinare interessata ad espandere i confini delle pratiche artistiche, negli spazi di UrbanGlass, storica struttura sperimentale che realizza vetro soffiato d’artista. Segue un artist talk di Francesco Cavaliere in dialogo con Abram Deslauriers del team di UrbanGlass.

L’evento è stato preceduto, venerdi 12 aprile, presso UrbanGlass, da Abyssal Creatures - Glass Peoples, lecture/workshop di Cavaliere in collaborazione con il Pratt Institute - Fine Art program, sui processi esplorativi con il vetro soffiato nelle sue creazioni.

Abyssal Creatures è un progetto di Francesco Cavaliere, curato e prodotto da Xing, che nasce da un percorso di scrittura fantastica, una saga che si ispira alle immagini della flora marina degli abissi, ibridate con figure archetipiche dell'inconscio umano. Questi Corpi Abissali, coagulati su vetro in forma di sculture sonore pensate assieme ai maestri di soffiatura di Murano sono dei veri e propri esseri che inspirano suono ed espirano risonanze. Le onde sinusoidali si irradiano nelle sculture insinuandosi e riflettendosi nelle loro molteplici cavità (antenne, organi semplici convessi), restituendo una massa udibile più o meno complessa che invoglia chi ascolta ad entrarci dentro.

La scultura prototipo in cristallo trasparente dalla testa iridescente Phalaminàsh0, detta Corp0 (o Body0) enunciando le sue nomenclature dinastiche, è la primogenita di questo insieme animale. Questa scultura sarà azionata in occasione di due speciali presentazioni curate da ISSUE Project Room. In entrambe le giornate la scultura sarà accompagnata dal sostegno alare di due corni vitrei XILEMA, le prime opere in vetro realizzate da Cavaliere con i maestri del vetro Thaiwanesi a Berlino nel 2014. L’unione di Corp0 e Xilema darà vita a un’inedita forma chimerica trasparente, che verrà installata, narrata e suonata da Cavaliere (voce, vetro, microdiffusori, laptop). Un’occasione per affacciarsi su un universo etereo, sospeso tra alchimia e fisica fantastica, che ricolloca il sapere sulla materia e la natura -dalla botanica alla cristallografia- in una dimensione poetica, che eccede un pensiero misurato.

Le opere di Francesco Cavaliere per il progetto Abyssal Creatures sono un ensemble di sculture vitree concave, in vetro soffiato, che richiamano animali e piante delle profondità marine, creature non bipedi, trasparenti, lontane da qualunque rappresentazione umana. Ecco la loro fisiologia secondo Cavaliere: “Sono grandi corpi sonori che funzionano come strumenti musicali ambivalenti (idiofoni, come campane, e areofoni, suscettibili alle vibrazioni dell’aria) per cui sono state usate le due materie trasparenti per eccellenza: il vetro, forma rigida e cristallina, e il suono, elemento intangibile, che per vie aeriformi si muove e organizza. Gli elementi floreali delle sculture e le forme curvilinee costituiscono un insieme di risonatori sonori, conico cilindrici, che ospitano dei sistemi di riproduzione e diffusione sonora. Le sculture sembrano essudare rumori, il suono le attraversa come un sistema vascolare astratto.“

ISSUE Project Room, organizzazione pionieristica no-profit con sede a Brooklyn, fondata nel 2003, presenta progetti di artisti interdisciplinari che espandono i confini della pratica artistica e stimolano il dialogo critico in un ampia comunità. ISSUE funge da incubatore culturale con ospitalità e commissioni di nuove opere innovative e trasversali tra musica, danza, letteratura e cinema.

UrbanGlass, situato nello storico Strand Theatre del 1918 nel quartiere culturale di Downtown Brooklyn, è il principale impianto di soffiatura del vetro dell'area metropolitana di New York. È stato fondato nel 1977 da artisti ed era originariamente conosciuto come New York Experimental Glass Workshop.

Abyssal Creatures è prodotto e curato da Xing, sostenuto dalla Direzione Generale Creatività Contemporanea del Ministero della Cultura nell’ambito del programma Italian Council (12° edizione, 2023). Saturday 13 April 2024 Xing presented in Brooklyn (NY), Abyssal Creatures - Body0 Xilema, sound performance & installation by Francesco Cavaliere, a double event curated by ISSUE Project Room, interdisciplinary organization interested in expanding the boundaries of artistic practices, in the spaces of UrbanGlass, a historic structure that fosters experimentation with glass as a creative medium. Follows an artist talk with Francesco Cavaliere in conversation with Abram Deslauriers of UrbanGlass.

The event was preceded on Friday 12 April, at UrbanGlass, by Abyssal Creatures - Glass Peoples, lecture/workshop by Cavaliere, in partnership with Pratt Institute - Fine Art program, on exploratory processes with blown glass in his creations.

Abyssal Creatures is a project by Francesco Cavaliere, curated and produced by Xing, that materializes a fantasy narrative about a group of creatures and develops in a new saga inspired by the images of the marine flora of the abyss, hybridized with archetypal figures of the human unconscious. These creatures, coagulated on glass in the form of sound sculptures designed with the Murano glassblowing masters, are beings that inhale sound and exhale resonances. The sinusoidal waves radiate into the sculptures, insinuating themselves and reflecting in their multiple cavities (antennas, simple convex organs), providing a more or less complex audible mass that entices the listener to enter inside.

The prototype sculpture in transparent crystal with the iridescent head Phalaminàsh0, aka Corp0 (or Body0) stating its dynastic nomenclatures, is the firstborn of this animal ensemble. This sculpture will be activated in two special presentations curated by ISSUE Project Room. In both occasions the sculpture will be accompanied by the support of two XILEMA glass horns, the first glass works created by Cavaliere with the Thai glass masters in Berlin in 2014. The combination of Body0 and Xilema will give life to a new transparent chimeric ensemble, which will be installed and played by Cavaliere (voice, glass, microspeakers, laptop) between story-telling and the magic of sound. An opportunity to look out onto this artist’s ethereal and fluctuating universe, suspended between alchemy and science-fiction, which relocates knowledge about matter and nature - from botany to crystallography - in a poetic dimension, which goes beyond measured thought.
The artworks by Francesco Cavaliere for his project Abyssal Creatures are an ensemble of concave Murano blown glass sculptures, which recall animals and plants from the depths of the sea, non-bipedal, transparent creatures assembled like communicating vessels that form a sounding body. The Music that flows inside them is like an abstract vascular form, drawing inspiration from the Xylem and the lymphatic systems that some plants have. Here is their physiology according to Cavaliere: “They are sound bodies that function as ambivalent musical instruments (idiophones, such as bells, and areophones, susceptible to air vibrations) for which the two transparent materials par excellence were used: glass, rigid and crystalline, and sound, an intangible element, which moves and organizes through gaseous paths. The floral elements of the sculptures and the curvilinear shapes constitute a set of conical-cylindrical sound resonators, which host sound reproduction and diffusion systems. The sculptures seem to exude noises, the sound passes through them like an abstract vascular system.“

Abyssal Creatures is produced and curated by Xing, supported by the Directorate General for Contemporary Creativity of the Italian Ministry of Culture under the Italian Council program (12th edition, 2023).
