Sabato 4 e domenica 5 novembre 2023 Abyssal Creatures (sound installation & appearence) di Francesco Cavaliere è stato presentato al Serralves Museu de Arte Contemporanea di Porto nel contesto del festival O Museu como Performance.

Abyssal Creatures è un progetto di Francesco Cavaliere, curato e prodotto da Xing, che nasce da un percorso di scrittura fantastica, una saga che si ispira alle immagini della flora marina degli abissi, ibridate con figure archetipiche dell'inconscio umano. Questi Corpi Abissali, coagulati su vetro in forma di sculture sonore pensate assieme ai maestri di soffiatura dei forni di Murano, si sono manifestati per la prima volta negli spazi del Museo Serralves a Porto sotto forma di installazione sonora & apparizioni per il festival The Museum as Performance.

Un’occasione per affacciarsi su un universo etereo e fluttuante, sospeso tra alchimia e science-fiction, che ricolloca il sapere sulla materia e la natura -dalla botanica alla cristallografia- in una dimensione poetica, che eccede un pensiero misurato.

Le nuove opere di Francesco Cavaliere sono un ensemble di sculture vitree concave, in vetro soffiato, che richiamano animali e piante delle profondità marine, creature non bipedi, trasparenti, lontane da qualunque rappresentazione umana. Ecco la loro fisiologia secondo Cavaliere: “Sàbanas I, Aliquomàs e Enquomanàsc sono tre grandi corpi sonori che funzionano come strumenti musicali ambivalenti (idiofoni, come campane, e areofoni, suscettibili alle vibrazioni dell’aria) per cui sono state usate le due materie trasparenti per eccellenza: il vetro, forma rigida e cristallina, e il suono, elemento intangibile, che per vie aeriformi si muove e organizza. Gli elementi floreali delle sculture e le forme curvilinee costituiscono un insieme di risonatori sonori, conico cilindrici, che ospitano dei sistemi di riproduzione e diffusione sonora. Le sculture sembrano essudare rumori, il suono le attraversa come un sistema vascolare astratto.“

Nelle tre sculture in vetro di Murano, assemblate come dei vasi comunicanti, viene diffusa una composizione sonora e le stesse sono animate dall’artista che si ibrida con loro. Una vita sonora, fatta di alti e bassi umorali, di stasi e ventilazioni, che come una linfa va ad animare le sculture facendole illusoriamente vivere.
Nel corso delle due giornate l’installazione sonora ha avuto momenti di attivazione in diverse fasce orarie e condizioni di luce, delle apparizioni in cui Cavaliere ha performato una costruzione narrativa che circonda l’aspetto musicale sonoro.

Abyssal Creatures è un progetto prodotto e curato da Xing, sostenuto dalla Direzione Generale Creatività Contemporanea del Ministero della Cultura nell’ambito del programma Italian Council (12° edizione, 2023). On Sarturday 4 and Sunday 5 November 2023 the sound installation & appearence Abyssal Creatures by the italian artist Francesco Cavaliere premiered at Serralves Museu de Arte Contemporanea in Porto in the frame of the festival O Museu como Performance.

Abyssal Creatures is a project by Francesco Cavaliere, curated and produced by Xing, that follows the narrative of a group of creatures from his fantasy writing about Peoples of Glass, that develeps in a new saga inspired by the images of the marine flora of the abyss, hybridized with archetypal figures of the human unconscious. These creatures, coagulated on glass, in the form of sound sculptures blowed by Murano masters, manifested themselves for the first time in Porto in the spaces of the Serralves museum, in an installative and performative dimension.

An opportunity to look out onto this artist’s ethereal and fluctuating universe, suspended between alchemy and science-fiction, which relocates knowledge about matter and nature - from botany to crystallography - in a poetic dimension, which goes beyond measured thought.

Abyssal Creatures are an ensemble of Murano glass sculptures, in blown glass, designed to represent other beings, assembled like communicating vessels that form a sounding body, non-bipedal and far from any human representation. These abyssal bodies expand their life through sound and vitreous resonances. The Music that flows inside them is like an abstract vascular form, drawing inspiration from the Xylem and the lymphatic systems that some plants possess. The Sound, as an invisible sap makes them alive, lights up their presence. Here is their physiology according to Cavaliere: “The Abyssal Creatures are at the same time musical instruments (both idiophones, such as bells, and areophones, susceptible to air vibrations) and sculptures that seem to live and sweat noise. The creatures are in different colours, and their cavities, holes and openings are points for a musical cascade. They are like taps to open and close, with which create musical compositions. The floral elements of the sculptures and the curvilinear shapes constitute a set of conical-cylindrical sound resonators, which host sound reproduction and diffusion systems.”

In the installation at The Museum as Performance, the three Abyssal Creatures (named Sàbanas I, Aliquomàs and Enquomanàsc) were standing, radiating sound from the centre of the space, like a group, an animal kingdom. From within the glass sculptures, each one assembled like communicating vases, a sound composition has been be diffused. A sonic life, made up of moody ups and downs, of stasis and ventilations, which like a sap animated the sculptures.
Over the course of the festival the sound installation had two moments of activation in different light conditions, appearances in which Cavaliere performed a narrative construction that surrounded the musical aspect of sound. In the live performances the artist tried to hybridize and start a dialogue with them.

Abyssal Creatures is produced and curated by Xing, supported by the Directorate General for Contemporary Creativity of the Italian Ministry of Culture under the Italian Council program (12th edition, 2023). The artworks will become part of the collections of the Museo d'Arte della Città of Ravenna.
