Xing presenta Vespri – actually the book is called, una serie podcast in 12 episodi di Mårten Spångberg che si sviluppa attraverso conversazioni notturne su estetica, devozione, comunità, desiderio, esaurimento e la strana possibilità che un altro mondo possa ancora essere immaginabile.

Il podcast fa parte del processo che porterà alla presentazione di Vespri nel 2027 in Italia, commissionata da Xing per il progetto FESTA. Pubblicati l'ottavo giorno di ogni mese, gli episodi si sviluppano in collaborazione con gli interpreti della danza che avrà luogo nell'unico edificio sacro progettato da Alvar Aalto in Italia.

E se la coincidenza fosse l'ultimo mistero rimasto?

Scienziati, teologi e filosofi nel corso della storia hanno disperatamente cercato di svelare le coincidenze, sostituendole con la conoscenza. Forse ciò che hanno veramente cercato sono quelle rare - rarissime - coincidenze per le quali non esiste, né mai potrà esistere, alcuna spiegazione. E' lì che finisce il limite e si pronuncia la parola  necessità: al di là dell'archeologia e della relatività, al di là della politica e dei dress codes.

In un momento in cui tutto sembra connesso eppure sempre più impossibile da comprendere, Vespri va alla ricerca di quegli incontri rari che sfuggono ad ogni spiegazione.

Mårten Spångberg si interessa di coreografia in un terreno vasto, avvicinandola attraverso pratiche di sperimentazione e processi creativi in una molteplicità di formati ed espressioni con un forte background critico, teorico, curatoriale e letterario. La sua ricerca si focalizza su come l'arte affronta l'ecologia, in particolare sulla soglia tra corpo e conoscenza, sensazione e valore, identità e forme attive di anonimato. Le sue performance riflettono le tensioni tra le dinamiche sociali, la formazione di movimenti politici e il rapporto lineare tra estetica occidentale e capitalismo estrattivo. Dopo essersi dedicato alla danza concettuale agli inizi della sua carriera, Mårten Spångberg ha sviluppato un rapporto rigoroso e profondamente personale con la danza, collocando la sua arte, nell’ultimo decennio, in uno spazio di voci sussurrate in cui la danza è una modalità di presenza, che apre paesaggi di contemplazione, lutto e una sottile sensualità. Il lavoro di Mårten Spångberg offre un momento prolungato, un allontanamento dal mondo che concede al singolo spettatore il permesso di non consumare immagini o informazioni, di non dover rispondere a stimoli o fare scelte, di non interpretare ruoli o impegnarsi in processi di conferma, ma piuttosto di abbandonarsi al qui ed ora ed essere presente a se stesso. Dal 2024 è direttore artistico di Ob/scene Festival a Seoul, in Corea.

Xing presents Vespri – actually the book is called, a podcast series in 12 episodes by Mårten Spångberg, unfolding through nocturnal conversations on aesthetics, devotion, community, desire, exhaustion, and the strange possibility that another world might still be imaginable. 

The podcast is part of the process leading up to the presentation of Vespri in 2027 in Italy, commissioned by Xing for the FESTA project. Published on the eighth day of each month, the episodes unfold in collaboration with the performers of the dance that will take place in the only sacred building designed by Alvar Aalto in Italy.

What if coincidence is the last remaining mystery?

Scientists, theologians, and philosophers throughout history have desperately attempted to unveil coincidences, replacing them with knowledge. Perhaps what they have truly searched for are those rare - exceedingly rare - coincidences for which no explanation exists, nor ever can exist. It is there that the fence ends and necessity is pronounced: beyond archaeology and relativity, beside politics and dress codes.

At a moment when everything appears connected yet increasingly impossible to grasp, Vespri searches for those rare encounters that resist explanation.

Mårten Spångberg is a multidisciplinary choreographer, curator and writer living and working in Berlin and Stockholm. His interest concerns dance and choreography in an expanded field. Something he has approached through experimental practice in a multiplicity of formats and expressions. While highly concerned with aesthetic experience his research focuses on how art addresses ecology in particular the threshold between the body and knowledge, sensation and value, identity and active forms of anonymity. His performances reflect tensions between social dynamics, the formation of  political movements and Western aesthetics’ linear relation to extractivist capitalism, expecially concerning the gaze and power. After being committed to conceptual dance in his early career, Mårten Spångberg has developed a rigorous and highly personal relation to dance. Having for a period created extremely loud, spectacular and eruptive work, his art over the last decade inhabit a space of whispering voices, dance as a mode of presence, opening up landscapes of contemplation, mourning and subtle sensualities. His work offers a sustained moment, turning away from the world and giving the individual audience member permission not to consume images or information, not having to respond to prompts or making choices, not to perform roles or engage in processes of confirmation, but instead to surrender to a here and now, to become present to themselves. Since 2024 he is the artistic director of Ob/scene Festival in Seoul, Korea.
