Venerdì 10 maggio 2024 dalle ore 19 alle 21 Xing presenta GUT, una sound performance creata dall’artista iraniana Diane Mahin. L’appuntamento è un nuovo Hole che si localizza a Bologna nello spazio Megadue, in Via Mascarella 16/A.

GUT, progetto della regista e sociologa Diane Mahin, è un singolare esperimento di messa in scena dello stupore: come si comporta un essere umano davanti all’esposizione dei propri organi interni? L’artista affronta da anni questa domanda nel suo lavoro, presentando diverse situazioni performative in cui vengono amplificati i suoni provenienti da un ventre umano, dando luogo ad un incognito paesaggio sonoro generato dal corpo del performer. I pensieri, le azioni e i movimenti dell'uomo-ventre sono determinati dai suoni del suo stomaco. Si innesca un gioco di sottili variazioni, gorgogli, borbottii, minimi smottamenti liquidi che re-indirizzano lo sguardo stupefatto del perfomer, Manuel Groothuysen, in una dimensione interiore che viene esteriorizzata come fatto sonoro e condivisa con lo spettatore. “Mi interessa confrontarmi con la realtà materiale del corpo. Siamo fatti di materia e batteri che alimentano un ciclo di vita e morte continuo: noi organismi facciamo parte dell'ecosistema.” Dallo spazio di MEGADUE il suono, catturato da una sorta di stetoscopio messo a punto da Mahin, viene propagato sotto il portico di via Mascarella per cogliere più da vicino questa epifania enigmatica della nostra più intima emozionalità organica. Il progetto è stato sviluppato con tecnologie della piattaforma olandese di Den Haag (L'Aia) instrument inventors initiative (iii), che si occupa di nuove pratiche interdisciplinari che intrecciano performance, tecnologia e percezione sensibile.

Diane Mahín è una performance-maker e sociologa olandese-iraniana. Crea mondi performativi le cui forze motrici sono l'immagine e il suono. Nel suono si riflette il desiderio di confrontarsi con forme di realtà altamente soggettive, provocatori e immersive. Mahín esamina il corpo umano come oggetto materiale per analizzare le costruzioni sociali, cogliendone spesso l'assurdità e il ridicolo. La morte e il nulla sono motivi ricorrenti nel suo lavoro. Dopo gli studi alla Goldsmiths University a Londra e al Maastricht Institute of Performative Arts nei Paesi Bassi, Diane Mahin attualmente sta esplorando i princìpi dell'opera lirica all'interno della sua pratica al Sandberg Instituut di Amsterdam.

Hole è un formato che Xing ha iniziato a sperimentare dal 2022, occupando e attivando luoghi non istituzionali come ridefinizione temporanea di uno spazio pubblico.

Friday 10 May 2024 from 7 pm to 9 pm Xing presents GUT, sound performance conceived by the Dutch-Iranian artist Diane Mahin. The event is a new Hole located in Bologna in the spaces of Megadue, in Via Mascarella 16/A.

GUT, a durational performance by the performance maker and sociologist Diane Mahin, is a singular experiment in staging amazement: how do humans behave when their bodies are turned inside out? The artist has addressed this question in her work for years, presenting various performative situations that give rise to an unknown soundscape generated by the performer's body. During this experience, spectators come face to face with a man whose intestinal sounds are amplified. The gut-human thoughts, actions, communications, movements and feelings are all determined by these visceral noises. A game of subtle variations is triggered, gurgling, muttering, minimal liquid landslides that redirect the astonished gaze of the performer, Manuel Groothuysen, into an internal dimension that is externalized as a sound fact and shared with others. This performative world draws attention to the thin boundary between life and death, conscious reasoning and the subconscious gut, resulting in a visceral and absurd experience. “I'm interested in dealing with the material reality of the body. We are made of matter and bacteria that fuel a continuous cycle of life and death: we organisms are part of the ecosystem.”From the space of MEGADUE the sound, captured by a sort of stethoscope conceived by Mahin, is propagated under the arcades of via Mascarella to capture more closely this enigmatic epiphany of our most intimate organic emotionality. The project was developed in The Hague within the instrument inventors initiative (iii), an artist run, community platform supporting new interdisciplinary practices linking performance, technology and the human senses.

Diane Mahín is a Dutch-Iranian performance maker and sociologist. She makes performative worlds in which image and sound are the driving forces. Working with sound reflects her desire to be faced with highly subjective, confrontational, and immersive forms of reality. Mahín scrutinises the human body as a material object in order to dissect social constructions, as she wishes to grasp their absurdity and humour. Death and nothingness form the underlying motives of her work. After her studies at Goldsmiths, University of London, London and Maastricht Institute of Performative Arts, Maastricht, she is currently exploring operatic principles within her practice at Sandberg Instituut, Amsterdam.
