Il progetto Mugen nasce nella seconda metà degli anni '90 a partire dalla ricerca sull'utilizzo di piattaforme digitali e analogiche nei rapporti tra sampling audio e tecniche di visual design. Il lavoro sulla materia sonora affronta la dimensione fenomenica e fisica  del suono, tra microsonorità e glitch.
Ne nasce un tipo di live set dal carattere meditativo, una contemplazione dei fenomeni sonori disegnati con precisione,  una raffinazione attenta delle frequenze utilizzate, una loro trascrizione visiva tonale espressa da partiture geometriche - cromatiche minimali – che evidenziano le influenze degli studi sulla cultura estetica visiva giapponese, che impegnano da anni Alessandro Canova, fondatore del progetto.

The Mugen project was born during the second half of the 90’s, starting from a study of the use of digital and analogical platforms in relation to audio sampling and visual design techniques. Their work on a sound subject tackles the phenomenological and physical dimension of the sound, which lies between micro-sound and glitch.
This gives rise to the meditative character of their live set, i.e. a contemplation of sound phenomena designed with precision and the careful refinement of the frequencies they use. Their visual, tonal transcription is expressed by minimally chromatic geometric divisions which highlight the influence of the aesthetics of Japanese visual culture, which Alessandro Canova, the founder of the project, has been studying and employing for years.
