Netmage 08

International Live Media Festival

24/1/2008 - 26/1/2008
Netmage - Live Media festival, Palazzo re Enzo Bologna

Impossibile tenerli nascosti.

Netmage 08: There is nothing worse than trying to hide the unsettling. Unless it's to negate it. Netmage is an unsettling festival, nothing entirely comforting. Above all because unstable, fluctuating and fundamentally unsettling is how we've decided to work in live media. A territory that, over the years, we have first circumscribed, then defined, then watched evolve (or contradict itself) and finally betray itself. The previous edition, Netmage 07, recovered a post-cinematographic tension and expanded on it, in order to verify the availability of live media to welcome stories which, fragmented as they were, spurred dialogue with the traditions of cinema. A satisfying effort, while heavy with collateral risks. With everything, the possible sliding of the center - or centers - toward the edge. With Netmage 08 we sink radically into key questions that every form of artistic experimentation including live media gambles with: the imageries. We tried to penetrate into the figures and representations, lowering ourselves into the depths of the uncertain scraps of taste and reflections on behavior. Placing in evidence the most alienating traces of the more than two hundred projects that arrived in the banishment section, until they collided with the mixed worlds of the invited guests and other productions commissioned by the festival. For certain there will be noise and intensity. To come to terms with multiple and articulate developments of possible encounters, we have given life to a Mangrovia, the new edition which aims to flank the by now classical program of the Live-Media Floor, formatted by the 15 projects that constitute the skeletal structure of festival. The mangrove is a very peculiar subtropical plant. It evokes density, tangled branches, waters and above all the coexistence of separate worlds: sub-aquatic, aquatic, terrestrial and aerial. On the other hand, the mangrove is a metaphor for excellence in habitat and biodiversity. No image more than the mangrove seems more pertinent for a specific space that, for three days, invites irreverence and unheard-of sonic journeys found in a plant-garden-world; an environment dedicated to a perception, now contemplative now tempestuous, where diversity – of generations, origins (musicians, artists and performers), arenas (electronic music, sound art and visual arts) - brush against each other, mingle, clash and open themselves to temporary, more or less improvised collaborations. Again this year other spaces complete the circuit of the festival, from the palazzo's courtyard entry which will host Pneumatic Sound Field, to the hall given over to the cinema da camera for anagliph screening. A recovery inextricably remodeled from utopias, desires and the debris from minor XX Century disciplines from expanded cinema, electronics, and art video to unorthodox sonorities, noise, postdance musics, and visual artistic margins. A collection of unstable imagineries, interlaced with lines of anxiety that yet remain profoundly personal. Impossible to keep hidden.
